Gillingham FC promoted to League One
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on June 1, 2009
Our partner club Gillingham FC, had a fantastic finish to the 2008/2009 season, earning promotion at Wembley Stadium thanks to a last-minute goal by top scorer Simeon Jackson.
The Gills were promotion contenders for much of the season, but were edged out of the promotion places with a couple of games to go, meaning they had to go through the pressure of a tough playoff campaign.
A 0-0 draw away at Rochdale set up the second leg of the semi-finals at Priestfield – and a double strike from Simeon Jackson secured the Gills’ place at Wembley for the final.
The final itself was a tense affair, but Gillingham dominated most of the game and, with the clock ticking past the 90 minute mark, Jackson rose unchallenged at the far post to head in off the woodwork to send the Gills back up to League One at their first attempt.
