Gillingham hosted Braintree Town at Dartford’s 3G pitch. Braintree are a well run team that have just gained promotion to one division below Gills, and have won 4 consecutive League titles enroute.
Gills for the first time field Natalie Crinean (pictured), Kelly Herrett and Jodie Mugford along with a host of other new faces. Braintree brought a strong squad of 21 to the game.
Gills though started the game strong, and just got stronger, Amy Russ a star of last weeks goal less draw against Charlton caused constant problems down the left hand side, and got the first goal of the game.
The game was effectively over just after the half hour mark as 3 goals in 6 minutes put Gills well in control. Jodie Mugford got the second with a great long range effort, Charlotte Abbott got the third when she deflected Deanna Coopers effort in, and Natalie Crinean who caused problems all afternoon up front got her first of the day.
The Gills went 5 up just before the break when Crinean was fouled in the box, and she cooly slotted it away.
Half time, and despite 6 substitutes, Gills carried on where they left off, again it was Amy Russ who started the scoring and got her 2nd of the game, Chloe Phillips added the 7th and Crinean got her hat-trick again from the penalty spot.
As Gills kept on piling the pressure Chloe Phillips got her 2nd with a well taken shot that the keeper stood no chance with.
After the game manager Ian Varley had this to say “ Overall im very happy with the performance and felt we could of scored a lot more. As with pre season games the key is to get a good workout and not pick up any injuries and we’ve done that.
Gills next pre season outing see’s two teams travel to Northern Premiership side Luton LFC on Sunday 26th July
