Varley looks to take advantage
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 11, 2009
Speaking exclusively to the official Gillingham Ladies website, manager Ian Varley looks ahead to this weekend’s match with Lewes and stressed the need for his side to take advantage of their rivals’ slip-ups.
“Everyone’s looking forward to the game,” Varley explained.
“Lewes are a good team but the girls are very confident of registering another win. Once again we’ve had a good week’s training and the girls are in great spirit ahead of the match.”
The Gills had had a dream start to the season, and the gaffer couldn’t be happier with the progress his side is making this season.
“Obviously I’m pleased with how its going so far,” Varley said.
“We’re the only team undefeated and have maximum points from our games so far.
“MK Dons dropped points last week against Ipswich so it’s important we take advantage of that when we can.
“We have also progressed into the 1/4 finals of the league cup which is pleasing.”
Gillingham have strengthened considerably over the summer months and now boast two very competitive sides, with the first team and the reserves looking strong this season. According to Varley, this helps push both teams on to better things.
“Both squads we have now are full of quality and I have no doubt both teams will have a successful season. The reserves kick off this week too and I expect them to record a comfortable win as every player in the reserves is capable of playing in the first team, which is what I want.”
Varley revealed that this weekend could see the debut of another new face in the Gills squad.
“I must mention Annelle Massey, she only turned 16 this week and will make her debut for the reserves on sunday. She will be some player and is one of a number of players who could make first team appearances very soon.
“Deanna Cooper is away with Kent Cricket this week and we’ll be giving late fitness tests to Vicky Ashton Jones and Natalie Crinean.”
Gillingham’s match with Lewes kicks off at 2pm at Lordswood FC’s Martin Grove ground.
