Varley: ‘A good reaction’

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 23, 2009

ianvarley2Gillingham Ladies manager Ian Varley spoke exclusively with the Gillingham Ladies Official Website following his side’s 5-1 victory over Ipswich Town at the weekend.

“I’m delighted with the result AND the performance,” Varley explained.

“It was a good reaction to the defeat against Lewes and in truth we could have hit double figures, but I’m happy with five.”

The Gills’ strike partnership of Natalie Crinean and Ashlee Hincks was once again the key to victory – and the gaffer was quick to heap praise on his front two.

“Going forward I don’t think there is a better team in our league, the players we have in those attacking positions are outstanding.

“Ashlee terrorised their defence all afternoon and once again Natalie’s finishing was different class. Her second goal was pure quality and one of the best goals of the season so far.”

While the forwards were banging in the goals at one end, the Gills’ back four were keeping things tight at the other.

“Defensively we were very solid again and I only recall Ipswich having two shots on target, with one of them being the goal.

“Lesley Kay was superb at left back and proved yet again she can play anywhere in the team.”

Results elsewhere in the division went Gillingham’s way and, with the Kent side now eyeing the top spot in the table once again, Varley is confident his team can embark on another good run, starting with a win over local rivals Ebbsfleet United this weekend.

“Obviously I’m delighted with the other results and we’ve just got to take our games in hand and make make them count.

“Personally I think the league will be between us and Enfield because after a shaky start they are starting to find some form.

“Looking ahead to Ebbsfleet, it’s just another game we have to win. To them it’s their cup final but to us it’s just another game where were looking to get three points and cement our place at the top of the league.

“People talk about Kent bragging rights but it’s a fact that were the best team in Kent as we are already 11 points clear of them in the table. It should be a good game, though, and it’s one I know the girls are looking forward to.”
