Varley: “We can defend as well as attack”
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 30, 2009
Following Gillingham Ladies’ 5-0 win at Ebbsfleet United on Sunday, manager Ian Varley explained how pleased he was to get a win against a side who he felt took a rather robust approach to the game.
“After a sloppy start we dominated the whole game and produced a very good performance against a team who just tried to kick us,” varley explained,
“I was especially pleased because my players rose above it, played some superb stuff and got themselves a well-deserved 5-0 win.”
Despite the wide margin of victory, the Gills boss felt his side could have made the scoreline even more emphatic.
“Once again we missed numerous chances,” he said.
“But as we create so many this is bound to happen.
“We do need to be more ruthless when games are at 0-0 though as the first goal always settles us down.
“Once again our defence was excellent. They had to deal with a lot of high balls throughout the match and they coped with them well.
“Ebbsfleet didn’t have a single shot on target in the whole 90 minutes, which proves that we can defend as well as attack.
“Overall it was another good performance from the team. Five goals, a clean sheet and, most importantly, three more points towards our final total.”
