Game time brings goals for Kylie
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on November 15, 2009
Reading this website and checking out Gillingham Ladies’ string of convincing wins, it can be easy to concentrate on the scorelines and forget that football is all about enjoyment and development too.
One Gillingham Ladies player in particular is very aware of this – and has made a mature and perhaps unusual decision to help her develop as a player while enjoying her football.
That player is Gills striker Kylie Overton, who has been with the Gills for three seasons following her move from Crystal Palace.
Kylie started the season in the first team squad, but has found regular game time hard to come by this year. But rather than being content to sit on the bench and make cameo appearances as a sub, she spoke to manager Ian Varley to ask to drop down to the reserve team.
Kylie explained, “Playing for the reserves I’m getting a lot more game time now.
“There’s some quality players in the first team and I was only getting five minutes here and there so that’s why I asked to drop down to the reserves.
“Hopefully I’ll develop more in the reserve team and Ian (Varley) will see that I’m doing well and if he brings me back up to the firsts in future I’ll hopefully be a better player and worth my place in the side.”
“I asked to drop down to get more time on the pitch and to help me improve more as a player and gain more confidence, and I’m really enjoying it.”
The results are there for all to see, with Kylie starring for the reserves this afternoon, bagging a hat-trick in Gills Ladies Reserves’ 7-1 win over Long Lane at Martin Grove.
“The teamwork was brilliant today,” Kylie said.
“We passed it well, keeping it on the floor and it was a really good win for us. And obviously, I’m glad to get a hat-trick as well!”
