kerryscottGills Ladies reserves thumped visitors Long Lane 7-1 at home in an impressive performance on Sunday afternoon at Martin Grove and moved into second place in the League in the process.

The Gills set about their opponents from the first whistle and went ahead mid way through the first half thanks to a 25-yard free kick from Terri Reynolds. Kerrie Scott made it 2-0 before then scoring her second of the game just before half time to make it 3-0. Long Lane did pull a goal back on the stroke of half time thanks to their number nine.

In the second half the superior fitness of the Gills showed through as Kylie Overton bagged a hat trick and Annelle Massey made it a comfortable afternoon for the home side.

Manager Sean Edwards was forced to juggle his pack with call ups to the first team squad. Amy Russ came back into the centre of midfield as Leanne Stevens moved to centre half to replace Kate Foster.

The Gills were on the attack from the first minute as they won an early corner, it was swung into the box but the Gills couldn’t get a decisive touch and it was cleared away by Long Lane.

In the 5th minute the Gills conceded a free kick on the edge of their area. It could have been a dangerous situation for the Gills but the Long Lane Captain stepped up and hit it straight into the Gills wall who then cleared the ball away.

Just three minutes later and the conditions came into play, Captain Kim Bolden with a throw to Amy Russ on the right wing, it looked for one minute as thought it might cause the keeper some problems but it got caught in the wind and drifted out for a goal kick.

In the 20th minute Amy Russ hit a shot that Chloe Phillips then followed up but her shot hit the post. The ball then worked its way to Kylie Overton and she unleashed a shot that was tipped against the cross bar.

Five minutes later and the Gills did finally take the lead thanks to a superb free kick. Chloe Phillips was unceremoniously dumped to the floor and from 35 yards Terri Reynolds stepped up and found the top corner to make it 1-0.

On the half hour mark Kylie Overton sent a cross into the area that Amy Russ got on the end of but her shot was well saved by the Long Lane goalkeeper.

In the 38th minute Kerrie Scott came forward from left back and unleashed a shot from distance after good work from Lauren Harris that flew past the keeper and into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Right on the stroke of half time the game sparked into some life first of all when the Gills moved into a three-nil lead.

Kerrie Scott was into her stride now and from left back she came down the left wing and fired home her second goal of the game past the despairing keeper.

Just a minute later and Long Lane were back in the game when the Long Lane striker picked up on a ball over the top that caught the Gills defence out and rounded Jessica Nunn to slot home and make it 3-1.

Half Time 3-1

Arguably the Gills got into their stride in the second half and as an attacking force they were just to hot to handle for Long Lane.

Just after the hour mark the Gills went 4-1 up thanks to good work in the midfield that saw Kylie Overton slot home her first goal of the game.

Just a short time afterwards and the Gills put the game well and truly out of sight as Annelle Massey scored a superb solo effort. She picked the ball up around forty yards out and unleashed an unstoppable drive that found the top corner leaving the keeper with no chance.

In the 68th minute Kylie Overton scored her second goal of the game and the Gills sixth after a well work move from the Gills.

The Gills should have gone 7-1 up in the 73rd minute when Kirsty Goodall played in Charlotte Thurston, she crossed the ball right across the Long Lane box but Kylie Overton just couldn’t get on the end of it to slot home.

In the 81st minute Kylie Overton grabbed her hat trick and rounded off the scoring after a good through ball from Kirsty Goodall left her with the simple task of slotting home.
