Best performance of the season – Varley

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on November 29, 2009

ianvarley2Gillingham Ladies manager Ian Varley spoke exclusively to the Gills Ladies website after his team’s resounding 3-0 win over Enfield Town in The FA Women’s Cup this afternoon – and hailed his side’s performance as the best of the season.

“What can I say?” Varley told us after the match.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the performance today and we looked a class apart from the moment the game kicked off.

“Every single player did their job and it was an excellent team performance in what were horrible conditions to play football in.

“But despite the conditions we adapted perfectly and played some good stuff and it is definitely our best performance of the season.

“Tactically we were spot on and the girls listened and did everything that was required of them. As you can probably tell I’m very pleased with both the performance and the result and we’re all eagerly awaiting the draw tomorrow now.

“No one will want to play us and we’ll go into the next round full of confidence.

The win not only sees the Gills progress through to the Third Round of The FA Women’s Cup, it also strikes a huge psychological blow to the teams in the South East Combination League. Enfield were unbeaten for the whole of the season until today – and the Gills’ three-goal victory lays down a huge marker for the rest of the season.

“We set out to go as far as we can in every single competition we’re taking part in and a result like today will give the players all the confidence they need to kick on and really go for it in every game. Beating the next best side in our division so comfortably means we have nothing to fear.

“It’s important we don’t become complacent as we have some tough games coming up, but if we apply ourselves and perform like we did today we’ll take some stopping!”
