We proved we can match them – Farmer

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on December 15, 2009

daniellefarmer2Gillingham playmaker Danni Farmer was one of the star performers in a good team performance against Barnet in The FA Women’s Cup this weekend, but despite looking the better side for long periods of the game, Barnet ruthlessly took their chances to knock Farmer and her Gills teammates out of the competition.

But despite losing out to the Bees in a well-contested match, Farmer was keen to stress the positives the Gills will take from the game.

“I think all the girls are a bit disappointed with the score but we’ve proved today that we can match it with the big boys,” said Farmer.

“I think overall we dominated play throughout and it was disappointing we couldn’t finish off our chances. They showed why they’re at the level they’re at, as they only really had a few small chances, but they took them all and made them look easy. That was the difference between the two sides today but we’re working towards that and we’ll definitely get there.”

The Gills may have lost the match, but Farmer explained that after the match the team was encouraged and excited for the remainder of the season after matching the best team outside the Premier League for long periods of the game.

“We’re buzzing,” Farmer explained.

“We’ve just proved that we can match them and we just want to get this season over with.

“I know it’s not set in stone yet, but we want to get promotion and compete at that level week-in, week-out, because we’ve proved we’re capable of doing that.”

Farmer is one of many players to have joined the Gills this season and she told us that she is thoroughly enjoying her football with the Kent club and relishing her role in the side, operating just behind the forwards.

“Vars (manager Ian Varley) has given me a lot of freedom,” she explained.

“At my previous clubs they generally stuck me out on the wing, but I’m playing in behind Nat (Crinean) at the moment and it’s paying off.

“We’ve got the four up top with the two wingers, the striker and me, and we’re able to play our football because we’ve got a really strong base at the back, so as a team it’s working really well at the moment.”

With the Gills still fighting on three fronts this season, Farmer and her teammates will be hoping that they can continue their good performances all the way through to the end and finish up with some silverware to show for their efforts.
