Varley can’t wait for league return
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on December 30, 2009
Gillingham Ladies manager Ian Varley spoke exclusively to the Gills Ladies website following the festive period and said he couldn’t wait to get back to the nitty gritty of league competition this weekend.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back into league action after the Christmas break,” he enthused.
“The girls have been magnificent and have been in for training throughout the Christmas period.
“They were even in the day after Boxing Day, which shows they are all committed to carrying on where we left off before the festive break.”
Gillingham Ladies face MK Dons away from home on Sunday and Varley knows that the match is hugely important as the Gills look to continue their good form.
“Sunday is a massive game for many reasons really. From my point of view as long as we come away from there with the 3 points I’ll be happy as points are what matter at this stage of the season,” he said.
“They are one of the better teams in the league but having started the season well they have dropped off since and although they are a point clear of us at the moment we have five games in hand over them.
“Even so we will have to go there and work hard to get the three points which is crucial if we want to stay at the top.”
The team have performed brilliantly so far, but Varley and his team know that, despite their impressive form in 2009, they need to continue in the same vein in 2010 if they want to pick up silverware at the end of the season.
“All the talk outside of the club is that we’re guaranteed to get promoted but within the squad we have never once discussed promotion and will only do so if it happens. We’re in a great position to do it but there’s still a long way to go.
“Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy new year!”
