Our finishing was ruthless – Varley

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on January 3, 2010

Gillingham Ladies manager Ian Varley spoke exclusively with the Gills Ladies Official Website to share his views on Gillingham’s 8-1 away victory at Milton Keynes Dons.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the result today,” he said.

“To go away from home against the second-placed team in the league and to win so convincingly is fantastic and gets us going again in the new year.”

The Gills fell behind after just three minutes but after recovering their composure they went in at halftime 2-1 ahead. But Varley was far from impressed with his team’s first-half performance.

“The first half was disappointing and I let the girls know this at halftime,” he explained.

“I appreciate it was the first game after Christmas and New Year break but we weren’t doing the basics right. I felt we were lucky to go in 2-1 up at halftime.

“The girls reacted with a brilliant performance in the second half. We worked hard, played good football and our finishing was ruthless.”

“I know she gets the majority of the headlines each week but Ash’s finishing was top drawer and she continues to produce first class performances week-in week-out!

“Katie Duffy had a bit to do between the sticks today and she pulled out some excellent saves and showed what a great goalkeeper she is.

“Today was a massive three points for us and we’ll be looking for the same result and performance next week at Tottenham, which will be another difficult game.”
