Bad weather is snow joke for Gills

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on January 12, 2010

Heavy snowfall and icy conditions have scuppered the New Year fixture programme for most clubs up and down the country and Gillingham Ladies are no exception.

They managed to play their match at Milton Keynes Dons on January 3rd, albeit in trying conditions, but found their first team and reserve team games called off last weekend as a result of the weather.

Manager Ian Varley spoke exclusively to the Gills Ladies website and explained how the team is adapting its training during the cold snap.

“Obviously very frustrating with the amount of games being called off but it can’t be helped,” he said.

“Instead of the usual training sessions we’ve been doing a lot of fitness work to keep the girls as sharp as possible and their application has been absolutely fantastic.

“It’s very easy for players not to turn up to training when they know games aren’t going to be on but the turnout to each session has been excellent.”

Gillingham won their last match 8-1 away at fellow promotion hopefuls MK Dons, and Varley said his side’s physical endurance played a major part in the result.

“I think our fitness showed against MK with what probably was one of our best second half performances of the season,” he explained.

“As I’ve said before the girls were in leading up to Christmas, in the day after Boxing Day and in between Christmas and New Year.

“I gave them all a week off in the middle of December and that definitely recharged everyone’s batteries. It’s very important to know when the girls need a break and I felt we did it at the right time.

“We’re now just hoping to get games on and carry on in our quest for three trophies.”
