Gillingham Ladies launch first football school

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on January 20, 2010

Gillingham Ladies are pleased to announce their first Football School which will hopefuly encourage more girls into football.

The course, aimed just for girls, will be held at the brand new state-of-the-art centre in Rainham run by playfootball.net

It is for girls from 5 to 11 years of age and the course will feature coaching from the qualified players from the Gillingham Ladies team, assisted by other players keen to get onto the coaching ladder.

The course is designed by Gillingham Ladies’ First Team Manager Ian Varley, while star striker Natalie Crinean will be the lead coach.

Natalie, who also coaches for Gillingham FC’s Centre Of Excellence, will be assisted each evening by various Gills Ladies players, including captain Becky Lyon, goal princess Ashlee Hincks, and some of the younger stars, Chloe Phillips and Charlotte Abbott.

Director of Football Martin Andrews arranged the school and said, “Hopefully it’s the first of many. Our girls are keen to get the message across that girls can play football, and we hope to encourage more girls to get into football.

“I myself have two young girls (six and nine years of age) and know that they want to go on football courses but feel left behind by the boys. We hope to break down that barrier and make the girls comfortable.

“The long term plan is to hopefully open schools in Sittingbourne, Maidstone and Strood.  Then we hope to be able to branch out into running holiday courses across Kent.

“At the moment the current course is for girls only, but we do intend to extend the course to get boys on board, too.”

The first course is scheduled to start on Friday 19th February.

Ages 5-8 will start at 5:00pm and ages 9-11 will start at 6:00pm.

Each session runs for one hour a week over a duration of five weeks.

At the end of each course, each participant will receive a certificate, medal, tickets to a Gillingham Ladies match and a signed photo.
