Special’s Corner: Kings of the Castle
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on February 3, 2010
We were unsure if we were going to play as the pitch was still hard when we arrived, but the ref gave the thumbs up.
Castle drew with us previous ly so we didn’t want to drop any more points. We went for the win from the very start.
We started off great with most of the possesion, playing some great one touch footy.
In the first half hour we had so many chances but just couldn’t score. Finally after 35 minutes we made the breakthrough when a through ball to Gemma Ridge was neatly slotted home to make it 1-0 and send us in at half time ahead.
In the second half the ground was begining to turn into mud but we battled on, looking for a second goal.
Castle played well, putting some good passes together and creating a few chances but in fairness they lacked any real conviction.
It wasn’t until the 75th minute that we made it 2-0 with a great header from Sammy Lester from a corner.
I think we are starting to become a real threat at set plays now and that goal certainly proved it.
The goal really seemed to boost the girls and in the 78th minute Kylie Overton made it 3-0.
With the game firmly in our hands the team relaxed and set up camp in the Castle half.
On 80 mins charlotte abbott got the goal she deserved with a well taken shot.
Chabs has been part of the first team set up for most of the season and has been unlucky to not grab a goal for the firsts. Plus Castle is her old club so you can imagine how pleased she was to score!
The team were really happy with their win and it was great t see most of the first team there to support us as their game was cancelled.
I’m afraid the “Special Moment” this week has to go to me! during the game, instead of clearing the ball I somehow managed to kick it into my own face!
That’s it from me for this week, speak to you all again soon!
