Mugford: This season has been immense

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on March 29, 2010

Jodie Mugford was the hero of the hour on Sunday as she scored the only goal of the game in a tight victory over Enfield.

The goal was all the more precious as it put them clear at the top of the table and ten points better off than challengers Norwich Ladies, who dropped points at Ebbsfleet.

Talking about the goal that she scored, Jodie said “It was a very important goal; the team definitely needed a boost as we had been under a lot of pressure.

“To be fair we had a couple of decent chances that on another day we would have put away and the game would have been completely different, but a wins a win, another three points in the bag!”

It wasn’t the best performance of the season from the Gills and the midfielder thinks it is down to the fact that both teams are now sick of playing one another.

She added: “We have played Enfield so much recently both teams are probably fed up of playing each other! but today’s game was a good battle, we showed little hints of what we are capable of, there’s plenty of time to show what we have as we have important games ahead of us

“Good sides show their character after games like this, we all battled and put together a performance that got us the result.

“I think the girls feel more satisfied after a performance like this than to be cruising games easily, not sure if games like this are good for Ian though, he nearly had a heart attack on the bench!”

After the game she took time out to reflect on just how good this season is and how it has the potential to get better for the Ladies.

She said: “This seasons been immense, don’t think anybody could have hoped for any better. We have all worked so hard and getting in the two cup finals is our reward for all the effort and commitment. It’s always good to win a trophy or two, or three.”

Jodie was one of the summer acquisitions from Millwall and she explains she has got some stick from the Girls for that.

She added: “All the girls slate me for being Millwall! I think they’re just jealous because I support a real team… hint hint Whitney Judd!

“I wasn’t happy to leave in the summer but under the circumstances I had to as I wasn’t happy at the way I was treated after being there nearly 10 years!

“I was also moving to Canterbury to go to university so joining Gills was ideal. I am very happy at the club, the girls are great and have a great squad, but the Den will always be home for me.

“I prefer playing the formation we have been playing this season compared to 4-4-2 as it gives us so many options of how to play and with the players we have got it’s great to attack teams.

“There’s a lot of competition but its healthy, it makes you try that little bit harder as each player fights for a starting place. It just shows the strength of our squad, which is a great thing to have.”

The Gills take on Ebbsfleet on Tuesday evening, and their opponents did the Ladies a favour in the title race by beating Norwich.

However the girls are not getting carried away and they know that they have to keep winning if they want to win the League.

“It has been in our hands for a while now, we just needed to keep winning and getting the points, although Ebbsfleet helped us out big time, we still have to knuckle down and get the wins our self

“It has been frustrating this year as the season has been stop start with games getting called off. Games versus Ebbsfleet are always big games and it was annoying for it to be called off, but we are all raring to go this Tuesday and hopefully get a good result.

“I love evening games, it just adds to the occasion where women’s football is traditionally played on Sunday afternoons. Let’s hope the flood lights hold out.”
