Gills players react to Kent Cup win

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on April 9, 2010

Last night was a special night for everyone involved with Gillingham Ladies Football Club as they lifted the Kent Cup for the first time.

After the game we exclusively caught up with a number of the Gills stars to find out just what it meant to them to win their first trophy of the season.

Whitney Judd
Winning the Kent cup meant so much to me! We have worked so hard this season and defiantly deserved to pick that cup up at the end of the night. I really enjoyed the game. It is good playing against the better teams because you know you’ve got to but so much work in and the results are always sweeter.

I was really nervous all day! Before kickoff I was shaking and everything but as soon as the game started I had to get my head into the game. The celebrations at the end were brilliant. It’s about time we had something to celebrate! I didn’t mean to nearly break Chabs neck we just always get to excited. I think the girls were all brilliant and put in 100% and that meant that we deserved to win that little bit more.

Natalie Crinean
It was literally just about hard work out there against Millwall, our team spirit was always going to get us through. As I said before I have been in cup finals but it has never felt as special as it does right now.

It is that little bit more special as I know how much it means to the rest of the girls to have won; it was good for all the old school players that have been here for years. It was petrifying for us when Ash went off but the whole squad faith that we could do it. It just goes to show that we have quality throughout the squad and that we don’t rely on one player.

We had a 16/17 year old playing tonight and she did an absolutely great job, obviously she is a different player to Ash but she did her best out there and she was great. We have now got the momentum to kick on for the rest of the season now and win the treble.

Charlotte Abbott
It was a great win for the team tonight, I almost came off the bench eight times to get on the pitch. I don’t mind that I didn’t come on to be fair we won and that is the most important thing to be fair.

It was a good game and we deserved to win and Bex scoring the winning goal was just great as well, we had the best opportunities apart from the one where they hit the post. I thought both of the shots from Farms and Nat that hit the post and the bar were going in; I was already off the bench ready to celebrate.

In the first half after the injury to Ash I think they took a bit of time to settle because that is a big loss but the girls did really well. We eventually settled down and then we hit the cross bar and the post in quick succession, the second half was more like the way we can play. We are all really proud of what we have achieved and it means so much too every single one of us to have won the Kent Cup.

Danni Farmer
It was absolutely brilliant it was a great occasion for everyone and I am really really pleased that we got the result in the end. Nat hit the bar and then I came up and hit the post and I was thinking it was going to be one of those nights.

Ash had gone off injured and we were thinking Oh God you know but I am thankful that we won it in the end. It was a bit of a scrappy goal, it came from a corner so I just thought I would stick the ball in there and anything can happen and thank god it did.

It feels that little bit more special for me to have won the Kent Cup with Gillingham, I have won Kent Cup’s, League Cups and the Community Shield and that but to me this really does feel special. We are such a tight knit group and it is really amazing to see where we are coming from and where we are getting to. Hopefully this is now the first of three trophies; we said the Kent Cup was the hard one so we can only lose it ourselves. Everyone is buzzing in the dressing room and we are all really happy with have done this and we can kick on now and win the other two.

Rachel Ahern
It was really good for me to start in the Kent Cup Final, it was definitely good as they are good players and were always going to give us a good game. At the end of the night lifting that trophy made it all worthwhile.

We definitely deserved the goal and it was well worked and although the goal was a little bit scrappy our overall play deserved at least one goal. We definitely created the more clear cut chances in the first half and probably the second half as well. In the first half when we had loads of chances and hit the post and the bar I wondered if it was going to be one of those games like against Northampton when we just couldn’t score, but we got the goal in the end.

At half time we went in and we said that we were going to go out there and do it in the second half for Ash and then kick on and do the treble. It is definitely the highlight of my career to date and to finish the season winning three trophies would be really special.
