Anchorians Res 0 v 6 Gillingham Res
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on April 19, 2010
They were further boosted by the news that title rivals lost to neighbours Aylesford to ensure the title race goes right to the wire. The Gills are currently ten points clear but rivals Ashford have three games in to the final part of the season.
The Gills opened the scoring through Terri Reynolds and followed it up with goals from Kirsty Goodall, Chloe Jamieson, Leanne Stevens and a brace from Amy Russ (Pictured).
Manager Sean Edwards had the luxury of being able to name substitutes against Anchorians even if striker Megan Cavell was stranded in Europe because of the Ash cloud. Lauren Harris was welcomed back after being out injured for a few weeks with an ankle injury.
The Gills took the lead in the 15th minute thanks to a well worked Gills move. Following a crunching tackle by Kim Bolden she picked out Kirsty Goodall. She won her side a corner and from the resulting kick by Leanne Stevens, Terri Reynolds powered home a spectacular header.
Despite the fact that Anchorians was not playing as there league position shows and the Gills being dominant they just couldn’t find the second goal that their possession deserved.
With half time fast approaching the Gills made sure they went into the break two goals to the good thanks to the returning Amy Russ.
She managed to create herself a bit of space on the edge of the Anchorians box and drilled her shot into the bottom corner off the post.
Half Time 0-2
In the second half the Gills were attacking down the slop and really got out of second gear and took the game to their hosts.
In the 56th minute Leanne Stevens produced a moment of magic that put the game beyond Anchorians.
She flicked the ball over one of the defenders heads and then did the same to the next on rushing defender and as the ball dropped in front of her she volleyed it past the keeper. It was surely a goal of the season contender for any team let alone Gills Ladies.
In the 61st minute the result was put beyond any doubt by Chloe Jamieson, who is now fully recovered from her ankle injury. She found herself in a bit of space and curled a fabulous shot straight into the top corner.
The Gills could have added to the score line at 4-0 when Kate Foster made a run from the halfway line and into the Anchorians area before being brought down. The referee pointed to the spot and Kate took the spot kick herself but blasted over the bar.
The introduction of fresh legs had the Anchorians defence at sixes and sevens and in the sunshine they began to tire quickly.
This allowed Kirsty Goodall to capitalise in the 65th minute when she hit a twenty yard effort passed the hapless keeper and into the net.
The Gills put the icing on the cake with five minutes left on the clock when Amy Russ bagged her second goal of the game with a great strike from distance.
Such was the Gills dominance of the game that keeper Jessica Nunn kept her eleventh clean sheet of the season and barely had to make a save.
Sean Edwards and his team know that they have to win their remaining two League games to stand a chance of winning the title, and given the fact they are still unbeaten in the League anything is possible.
