Abbott: I was happy to score
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on April 26, 2010
Striker Charlotte Abbott made a goal scoring return to the Reserve side on Sunday afternoon against Milton and Fulston.
The youngster was happy to get back into the goal scoring grove and a further ninety minutes under her belt.
She said: “I was happy to score the first but to score two just topped off a good afternoon of football.
“The last time I scored was against Ipswich and I haven’t scored many this season. I think I’ve scored 9 in 6 games for the reserves and then two for the first team so those two goals put me into double figures for the season, happy days.
“I’m not annoyed but obviously it would have been great to get a hat trick. I probably should have got a hat trick anyway, but I missed some good chances. I blame the pitch it was like playing on concrete! That’s my excuse anyway.”
Abbott has been used sparingly in recent weeks and feels that ninety minutes on Sunday afternoon has been of benefit to her.
She added: “It is always nice to play 90 minutes when I drop down to the reserves. It can at times get frustrating sitting on the bench week in week out so playing 90 minutes and scoring 2 was good for me.
Chabs has been involved with the first team all season and she was proud of her team mates for clinching the League title on Sunday afternoon.
She said: “I was straight on the phone to Becky Lyon after my game to see how they got on and I was so happy when I found out that we had been promoted.
“Obviously I was gutted not to have been there to join in the celebrations. Everyone has been quality all season and we deserve it. I am so proud of all the girls. They are legends.
“I never expected this when I first came up that’s for sure. Ian and Martin have worked hard this season to make us a premiership club and I am grateful that I have been a part of it.
The Gills face Ebbsfleet under the flood lights tomorrow night and Charlotte is looking forward to being part of the local derby.
She added: “It will be quite a good game I think. There will be a good number of supporters because it is a derby and hopefully we can finish off our home games on a high and get the win.
“I love playing under floodlights. There is something more exciting about it. Night games are the best. I think most of the other girls love it as well so that should spur us on a bit more on Tuesday night.”
