Players’ reaction to winning the League

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on April 26, 2010

Following the Gills draw with Norwich on Sunday afternoon we exclusively caught up with the players to gauge their reaction to completing the double.

Deanna Cooper Today was amazing! It’s the first time I’ve won anything important with the girls and the fact that it’s over an entire season just makes it that little bit more special. It’s been a great season with the girls and as it’s my first season playing women’s football, I cannot put into words how it felt winning and to finish the season knowing that next year we will be a Premiership side, it’s just quality.

Since about Thursday after training its all most of us could think about!! To win the league with the girls in our squad is just brilliant because we know that we have put everything in to get us to today!! And to win it is just quality!

Whitney Judd Winning the league meant so much to me and all of the girls! We deserved it because we have worked so hard throughout the season to get to where we are now. It’s a crazy feeling though! If you would of said to me last season that we were going to win the Kent cup, the League and be in the final of the league cup I would never had believed you.

It’s brilliant. Everyone is so happy at the club which makes it a wicked place to be! I’d like to say a big well done to the girls, Ian, Martin and everyone involved with the Gills.

Danni Farmer It was great to get the first goal and I think it really settled us down. We have had to come from behind in a lot of our other games recently so it gave us some confidence because we knew from then that they definitely had to score two.

It’s really fantastic to finally win the league. It is a weight off all our shoulders. We can relax now, we are where we deserve to be and I can’t wait to play Premiership football again. I know the girls are over the moon and are buzzing at the chance to compete at a high level.

COME ON NOW!!!

Amy Russ It was a special moment as I haven’t scored all season for the first team; I have scored a few for the reserve team.  I am just pleased that it went in although it is sort of a blank moment for me at the moment, as I can’t remember much about it.

It was also very special to score the goal that effectively sealed the title; it is a shame that we conceded two goals. It was a tight game and they got more into it as the game went on towards the end, we held it together though which is the main thing.  I was shocked to have played in the Kent Cup final and now the game that wins the League as well.  I am just really excited at the moment.

Les Kay Winning the League on Sunday felt really good, I can’t believe we have won two trophies, don’t think it has sunk in yet, and just hope we can make it the treble on Sunday. Was a shame we couldn’t see out the game and win the league with a win, but hopefully we can win the next two games and the Cup on Sunday.

I think we have really deserved it this season as everyone has really put it in and worked so hard, and we are now where we deserve to be, well done girlies woooooaaaawwwww, let’s hope the Ressies can win their league as well that would be awesome.

Rachel Ahern It means a lot to win the league, because it’s not something that happens all the time, so for it to happen is very exciting. It means a lot to all the players and everyone involved with the club to win it as well as they have all worked so hard throughout the season.

The moment the whistle blew was an amazing feeling, because we knew we’d finally done it. I felt a bit relieved as well because Norwich weren’t giving up without a fight and piled the pressure on towards the end.

Vicky Ashton-Jones Everyone was ready for Sunday, after letting ourselves down the week before we wanted to put it right against Norwich especially in front of our own fans. They have been great this year,  we’ve consistently had a steady turn out and certain individuals have been very vocal, I won’t mention any names, they know who they are!

It’s a shame we didn’t win the league with a victory that we deserved on the day, we were the better team and should have got all three points. At the end of the day though we got what we set out for this season and now we can’t wait to prove ourselves in the Southern Prem next season.

It’s a great achievement for everyone at the club and I can’t wait for next season.
