Varley: I still expect to win the game

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on April 27, 2010

Gills Ladies finish take on local neighbours Ebbsfleet in their last home game of the season this evening.

Fresh off the back of securing the League title they have the chance to finish their home games in front of their own fans in style.

Talking about the game under the floodlights, Ian said: “It is good to have secured the title not that I was worried if we had to beat Fleet to secure the title.

“It is just because it is a local derby that makes it that little bit more difficult. There will be changes because we have a cup final against Norwich on Sunday.

The manager won’t need to have his players fired up for the game against Ebbsfleet because every team wants to win a derby game.

He added: “It would be nice to turn them over and there will be quite a few changes, but I will still be expecting to win the game. Their captain describes me as arrogant and cocky which is not the case at all.

“I’m just confident in what I do and more importantly confident in the players we have as we have a squad full of quality. Kent Cup Winners, League Champions and League Cup Finalists says it all really.

“I see it as a fun game on Tuesday and it will be nice to just relax and enjoy the ninety minutes without having any pressure on our shoulders.”

Ian is still in a state of shock that he has guided his team to the League title and he was proud of what his side have achieved.

He said: “I think it only really hit home when Martin received the official e-mail from the FA congratulating us on our promotion. To be honest it’s a fantastic achievement and all the praise has to go with the players because what they have achieved as a squad is quite remarkable.

“To go from where this club was last year to Premier league football is brilliant for everyone involved and for everyone who has been involved with Gillingham Ladies from the very start. Also I must say the job Martin has done off the field is sensational and that’s a huge part of why this club will be playing premier league football.

“I could try and list all the great things he’s done for the club but I’d be here all day. He really does deserve a lot of credit. As does Captain Bex who again probably deserves this more than anyone and I couldn’t think of anyone better or who deserves to pick this trophy up and lead us into Premier League football next season. This club deserves to be a premier league club and I’m sure they will stay there for years to come.”

The Gills collect the trophy after the game against Ebbsfleet on tomorrow night and the manager is looking forward to it.

He added: “Tomorrow will be a great night regardless of the result and I’m sure we’ll have a big crowd to watch us pick up the trophy. As I’ve said before it’s all about the players and its going to be brilliant for them to pick up the trophy in front of family and friends and it’s really going to be a night of celebration.

“I must thank Liz SymIan Varleyons from the Kent FA who is coming down to present us with the trophy and I know personally she is delighted that Kent finally has a women’s team in the top tier of Women’s football.

“Liz works tirelessly promoting the game in Kent and this is also a reward for her hard work and hopefully our achievement will get more girls involved in women’s football at a grass roots level. It really is a huge achievement and one we’ll be celebrating for weeks to come. Please come down and watch the best team in Kent pick up the trophy that brings Premier league football.”
