Foster: We did it for each other

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on May 3, 2010

Kate Foster played an important role at the heart of the Gills defence this season as she helped her team win the South East Counties Division One East title.

It was a roller coaster ride of a season for the young centre half and yesterday morning’s game just added to that.

Reflecting on the game, she said: “Sunday afternoon was amazing we had ups and downs but came through it in the end but that was because we all had belief in ourselves and wanted to do it for each other.

“When we went down to 1-0 it was hard enough but when it went 2-0 the pressure was really on because we couldn’t afford to lose or just draw we had to win to get to what we deserved not just in the match its self but also in the whole season.”

The Gills created a number of chances in the game but it wasn’t until the last twenty minutes that they actually found the net.

Describing the moment they found the back of the net, she added: “When Kimi scored that goal we all started believing in ourselves again, Sean has said throughout the whole season to keep believing.

“Which we had to especially right at the beginning of the season when we were deducted five points but I think Sunday it really showed that we have believed and it has paid off.

“When Amy got our second we went mental I then thought maybe we might actually get what we deserve. When we scored that last goal to seal our season as Champions we were so happy we knew we had got what we deserved all season.”

It has been a remarkable season for the Ladies with comings and goings and points deductions but to win the League underlines the quality of the side.

“To come together this season and go win the League is something really special we have all really just gelled together and wanted to do it for each other and we have happy days.

“Having Sean coaching us this season has been really good he has helped us to achieve this and for that I want to say a big thank you as I am sure all the girls do to, and a big thank you to Martin and Ian too.”

Kate also took time to reflect on what has been a fantastic season on a personal note having played for the first team as well.

She said: “I have played for the firsts and reserves and I am pleased that I have had the chance to get the experience of the first team football but they are all quality girls and so I am glad I have played regular football with the reserves because that’s what you need when you want to improve.

“Next season I am really excited about playing in the Southern Prem reserves league and I hope to be able to get some time in the firsts but if next season is anything like this season then it will be something to look forward to.

“When we played Anchorians I really was up for it as I used to play for them I really wanted to score and when I picked that ball up and ran around them players I got awarded a penalty. I have never been able to score a penalty so I hoped I could have changed it but I didn’t which I was disappointed in.

“I did score a goal this season against Whitstable who I also used to play for when I went around several players so I was pleased for that I suppose one will have to do for this season.”
