Varley: No pressure on us
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on May 14, 2010
Ian Varley takes his side into the last game of the season on Sunday in a relaxed mood as they head towards the summer.
There is no pressure on the game with Norwich for the Gills so the manager will use it as an opportunity to give a few fringe players the opportunity to impress.
Talking about the game, he said: “I can’t wait to get it out of the way really as we have had a couple of weeks off now.
“We will go up there on Sunday and look at a few different players and some different formations and hopefully get the win and finish ten points clear.
“They might have a little bit more on the game as they are going to want to win and finish as runners up in the League.”
With Cup finals in recent weeks the season has gone on longer than most people would have anticipated due to the weather at the end of 2009, something the manager thinks is a bit annoying.
He added: “It has dragged on a little bit to be honest, which is a shame as people can sort of lose interest once you get promotion. People now just want to get the games played and get away for the summer.
“It just cannot be helped with the weather and that and Norwich had a game against Northampton last week. We have had to wait until now to play each other again, but we will go up there get the game out the way and have a nice break and come back looking forward to next season.”
The manager has enjoyed recent weeks with no pressure on his side and the more relaxed atmosphere at training.
He said: “There is no pressure for us, there might be for them as they want to finish runners up and make it an unbelievable season for them.
“We will go up there just enjoy it and play our football, if we win we win and if they win then they win. It is no big deal to us as we are in the premiership and they are not.
“They won the League Cup and alright we are disappointed not to have won the League Cup but it wasn’t out biggest priority. We only played two games to get to the final so it wasn’t exactly a huge competition for us.
“Our targets were to win the League and get to the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup, obviously we didn’t do the last one but we won the League and that is what we set out to do.”
Ash Hincks made a welcome return to the first team in the second half of the League Cup final and Ian revealed it was a massive boost for everyone.
He added: “Ash looked ok in training this week and we had a good session on Thursday night. Ash hasn’t done a lot for a while so hopefully she can get 90 minutes on Sunday.
“It gives everyone a massive lift and even in the Cup final when she came on it just lifted everyone they are all buzzing. It is great for her to be back as she deserves to play a part in the final game of the season.
“She can then have a decent rest and she turned Millwall down again this week so it looks like she will be staying with us, so we need to get her signed up now and the rest of the players who are here as well.
“Then we can start to look at plans for next season and get back for pre-season and get going and looking towards next season.”
