Varley: I was pleased to get the three points

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on May 17, 2010

Gills Ladies rounded off the season in style yesterday afternoon by beating Norwich Ladies one-nil and manager Ian Varley was clearly delighted.

The manager was delighted with his sides’ performance after seeing his side have to wait two weeks to play their final game.

Speaking after the final whistle, Ian said: “It is always good to end the season on a high and to win the League by ten points I think is a fair reflection on how much we’ve dominated this season.

“Obviously the result was irrelevant today but I was pleased to get the three points especially with the amount of changes we made.”

Ashlee Hincks made her first start in over a month after recovering from a broken arm sustained in the Kent Cup final and Ian was pleased to see her back playing again.

He added: “It’s always good to have your top players in the team and she makes such a difference. In truth today was just about getting her through the ninety minutes and the goal was a bonus but what a goal it was.”

Another player singled out for praise from the manager was midfielder Deanna Cooper who just seems to be getting better game by game.

He said: “She was just sensational. It is without doubt the best midfield performance I have seen for a long time.

“It’s difficult to describe but if you ask the other players they will agree. She pressed and closed down everywhere and when she did get possession she kept it and caused problems. Her work rate off the ball was a lesson for everyone watching. It was a Brilliant performance for a girl who isn’t even 17 yet.”

The manager gave a number of players a chance on Sunday afternoon to see how they would perform against a tough physical side.

He was clearly impressed with how the younger members of the team performed on a difficult afternoon.

He added: “I thought it was important to have another look at a few people today and in general everyone did well.

“Jess kept another clean sheet for the first team and again has proved she is more than capable of playing at this level. Liv McGregor obviously made her debut and I thought she was excellent.

“Nerves took over early on but once she relaxed she played really well against tough and physical opposition. I
took a lot out of today.”
