National Prem teams headline Pre-Season Line Up

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on June 19, 2010

Gillingham Ladies have compiled a strong pre-season line up for their first team. In order to prepare them for their debut season in The FA Premiership, the Gills face two National Premiership teams,  four Combination teams, and a local side who narrowly missed out on promotion to the Combination League.

18th July – (A) v Old Actonians

Old Actonians sensationally won promotion to the South East Combination League with a dramatic last day win. This will be the highest level the Actonians have reached and playing the Gills who won the league last season will give them a good indication on the gap between the league they was in last season and the Combination Leagues.

25th July – (H) v Lewes

This fixture will be played on a local pitch in the Medway towns. Lewes and the Gills are no strangers having been in the Combination Leagues together. Lewes was the only team to beat the Gills at home in the league last season. Lewes will be one of the teams pushing for promotion again this year.

Thurs 29th July – (H) v Millwall

National Premiership team Millwall head to Lordswood to provide a tough test for the Gills. Some would argue that perhaps Millwall should of been preparing for the Superleague instead. One of the giants of womens football got back into playing top flight football last season as they cemented their place in the National Prem.

1st August - (A) v Braintree Town

Braintree like Old Actonians are preparing for there debut season in the Combination League. A record six successive league titles have seen them rise up the Womens pyramid. Ironically both teams played each other at the start of there pre-season last year, and both went on to win their leagues. They are a well organised team and will certainly not be heading up to the Combination League just to make up the numbers.

Thurs 5th August – (A) v Maidstone Town

Maidstone Town could be preparing for the Combination League this season, but they lost on the final day of the season which meant Old Actonians pip them at the post.  Its good to see another Kent team pushing up the league ladder. Gills have met in the Kent Cup for the last two years running, with Gills winning both games.

8th  August - (A) v Enfield Town

Certainly no strangers, having met four times last season, in League, League Cup and FA Cup. The Gills won all four games, but none of them was a walk in the park. Enfield have finished league runners up for the past two seasons, and will be one of the favourites for the league this season, especially with the prospect of one going up via the play offs.

15th August – (H) v Watford

National Prem side Watford complete the line up as they visit Lordswood to face the Gills. Watford are an established team in the National Premiership so will present probably the toughest test. Ashlee Hincks signed from Watford last summer so that shows the pedigree that they have in there squad.

The Gills are also working on there fixtures for the Reserve team, the reserves kick off there league campaign two weeks later. Any team wishing to play the Reserves please email Martin Andrews – gillinghamladies@yahoo.co.uk
