Ressies Roundup: Part Two
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on June 21, 2010
In part two of Ressies Roundup we take a look back through the Reserves campaign during December, January and February.
December was a frustrating time for the Reserves as they didn’t get one game played due to the weather. This meant that the team faced a massive fixture back log later on in the season.
January was equally as frustrating as they saw two more games postponed before they set foot on the football pitch.
When they did they let their frustrations show in the games that they did eventually play, first up was Gravesham in the League Cup.
The League Cup first round match against Gravesham finally got played at the third attempt and they cruised into the second round with a 4-1 win. Kylie Overton and Anelle Massey were back on the score sheet once again along with Gemma Ridge and a first ever goal for Gills for Sammy Lester against her former club.
Castle Colts then visited Martin Grove and played out a tough game on a pitch that somewhat resembled a blood bath once the match had been finished. Sammy Lester was on the score sheet for the second match in a row, and there were also goals for Gemma Ridge, Kylie Overton and Charlotte Abbott.
Whitstable Town were totally dismantled at Martin Grove as February kicked off and the Gills hammered their opponents 13-0. Charlotte Abbott who had dropped from the first team to get ninety minutes proved her quality as she scored four goals in a fine individual performance. Chloe Phillips was on the score sheet with a well taken brace and there were goals for Goodall, Stevens, Overton, Ridge, Foster, an own goal and one from Lauren Harris.
The Reserves were back in League Cup action once again in mid February when they headed to Milford and Whitley. They almost didn’t make it after the bus broke down, then they bundled into their cars and got stuck in traffic. This only served to galvanise them as Charlotte Abbott, Anelle Massey and Chloe Phillips found the net and there was also a rare goal for inspirational leader Kimi Bolden.
Once again the Reserves finished the month with more postponements as the games against Milton and Fulston and the double header with Gravesham all fell victims of the weather.
Next time we will take a look at March, April and May and just how they won the League title by doing things the hard way.
