Weekend Preview

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on July 24, 2010

This weekend see’s both Gills Ladies teams in action, the firsts play their second game against Lewes whilst the Reserves travel across the river to Basildon for their first game of pre-season.

It is the first time this season that both squads have been in action and it gives the Reserve team the chance to get back to competitive action having not had a friendly last weekend.

Pre-Season is generally a time for managers to shape their squads for the upcoming season and look at trialists that might add some value to their team, it is no exception with Gills Ladies. As both Ian Varley and Aaron Perry look to work out who will be in their starting line ups come the first game of the season.

Firsts

The first team got off to a great start last weekend as they demolished Old Actonians 6-0 thanks to a hat trick from Deanna Cooper as well as goals for Natalie Crinean, Jodie Mugford and Sian Cheedy.

They will be looking to continue this good form against Lewes who finished ten points behind the Gills last season in the South East Combination League. Lewes were however the only team to inflict a defeat on the Gills at home in the League when they left with all three points thanks to a 3-1 victory in September.

The Gills did avenge that score with an impressive 4-2 win away from home in October when Ashlee Hincks bagged a brace and there were goals for Natalie Crinean and Danni Farmer.

Lewes will be among the favourites for the South East Combination League next season and will see the game as the ideal test of their progress during the closed season. Similarly the Gills will be using it to see how far they have progressed and the strength of their new summer signings.

The Squad

Jessica Nunn, Katie Duffy, Lauren Williams, Les Kay, Becky Lyon, Sian Cheedy, Vicky Ashton-Jones, Rachel Ahern, Deanna Cooper, Danni Farmer, Jodie Mugford, Natalie Crinean, Lauren Phillips, Ashlee Hincks, Laura Jeffery and Natalie Farbrace

Reserves

The Reserves taken on Basildon in their first pre-season fixture of the season as they look to build their match fitness ahead of their debut season in the Southern Premiership Reserve League.

It is also the first chance that new manager Aaron Perry and his assistant Matt Adkins have had to see their squad in competitive match action since taking over two weeks ago.

In training the players have been receptive to his sessions and his ideas and he will be hoping that this transfers onto the pitch when they travel to Essex on Sunday afternoon.
