Lewes 2-4 Gills Ladies

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on July 25, 2010

The first team continued their pre-season campaign with a good victory over a Lewes side who were runners up in the League to the Gills last season.

The Gills goal scorers were a familiar duo as Ashlee Hincks netted a hat trick and Danni Farmer got on the score sheet as well.

It nearly turned into a disaster for the team as they got stuck in a bad accident and arrived at 2pm when the game should have kicked off.

The kick off was moved back half an hour to allow the girls to warm up and prepare for the toughest game of pre-season so far.

It took the Gills a while to get going because of this but once they found their stride they started to create some good chances.

They took the lead in the 22nd minute after fantastic play by midfielder Danni Farmer. She showed a great touch before knocking the ball 30 yards.

Natalie Crinean latched onto it and squared the ball for Ashlee Hincks and she had the simple task of tapping it into the back of the net.

This saw the Gills go on the attack and they could have gone further ahead when Hincks saw a free kick crash back off the bar from 25 yards out. Good crosses from both Danni Farmer and Ashlee Hincks just couldn’t be finished off in the Lewes area.

The second goal came in the 33rd minute when Ash Hincks swung in a trade mark corner that landed at the feet of Danni Farmer, and she volleyed home from eight yards out.

The Gills continued to press for the third goal as half time approached but they just couldn’t find a way past the Lewes back line.

Half Time 0-2

The second half continued in the same vein as the first half as the Gills looked to press home their advantage.

Strangely it took until the hour mark for the Gills to get the third goal of the match and it came after great work from Deanna Cooper.

She won the ball and played an inch perfect ball wide for Vicky Ashton-Jones, she played the ball into the area first time. Ash turned sublimely in the box and this left her free to slot under the keeper to make it 3-0.

Lewes pulled a goal back five minutes later when a simple ball was squared across to the striker who had the simple task of tapping in past Jessica Nunn.

They made it 3-2 with fifteen minutes left as poor marking left Lewes with time to smash home an effort unchallenged.

With two minutes left on the clock the Gills made the game safe thanks to good work by Natalie Crinean.  She broke clear from midfield and played an inch perfect pass to Ashlee Hincks.

She then calmly lifted the ball into the roof of the net to complete her hat trick, and become the second Gills player to score a hat trick in successive weeks.

Despite the appalling preparations for the game the Gills will be happy to have won their second game in a row so far this pre-season.

Full Time 2-4
