Perry: It was nice to get the win
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on July 26, 2010
Reserve team boss Aaron Perry was pleased with his sides display in their first pre-season friendly on Sunday afternoon.
It was the first time that he has had to see his squad or someone of them at least in competitive match action.
Talking exclusively to the Official Site after the final whistle, he said: “It was nice to get the win in the first game. The first half was very positive and the second half I thought we tired a bit but we got there in the end.
“It was good for the girls and it was nice to see them in a game situation, and there were a lot of positives that we can take from the game.”
It was the team’s first game in anger for eight weeks so it was more about the result than it was the performance, something Aaron agrees with.
He added: “It was about blowing the cobwebs away today, and next week we are at Charlton which will be a much harder opposition.
“It was nice to have a game and it was a good run out for us this afternoon, Basildon were ok they worked hard as a team and the girls did well and got the first game under the belts.”
Despite their hard work Basildon failed to register a shot on goal bar the own goal that was conceded early on.
Giving his reaction to the goal Aaron, said: “It is always disappointing to give a goal away especially from a set piece.
“I was pleased that the girls defensively were good and as a team we restricted them to efforts from long range. I can’t remember Ruth making a save to be honest with you which is always positive from a coaching perspective.”
The manager was also pleased to see his two strikers get on the score sheet on Sunday afternoon and open their account in pre-season early.
He added: “It was a good game for the girls to score in to be fair. I thought they did really well and worked hard in parts. I think Kylie worked hard and her general link up play was excellent.
“Chabs got in amongst them and got her head on one in the end, obviously she got a knock and had to come off but it was nice for them both to score as it gives them some confidence and hopefully go on from here.”
The manger was impressed with his side on Sunday and paid a compliment to his players especially their first half performance.
He said: “I said to them that I was impressed with them especially in the first half as they looked like a side who were trying to impress.
“I thought they were excellent in the first half and I was really pleased with the performance in the first 45 minutes.”
