Millwall Lionesses Preview

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on July 28, 2010

Gillingham Ladies play their first home pre-season friendly on Thursday evening and what a game it is.

National Premiership side Millwall are coming to town to provide the Ladies with undoubtedly their toughest game yet.

This summer Ian Varley has signed a number of players to strengthen their squad three of whom have come from Millwall.

Strikers Laura Jeffery and Lauren Phillips have joined along with left back Stacey McConville, and it will be the first time that some of them will get the chance to play against some of their old team mates.

The match is sure to be an entertaining one as both managers look to shape their squads for the coming season.

Varley’s Views

“In terms of who we’ve played so far in pre-season then yes this is the biggest test. It will give us a good indication of where we are at in terms of fitness and levels of performance so I am personally really looking forward to it.

“Milwall have quality players all over the pitch so we’ll have to be aware of everyone. They’ve got a really good squad and should challenge for the National Division title this season.

“I think everyones looking far too much into the game this week. For me its another pre-season friendly but against a team full of quality. As I have said I want to see where we are at and how we play against better opposition and then that will give me more of an idea of who will be playing come the first game of the season.

“Yes it would be nice to win but that wouldnt make us world beaters and likewise if we were to lose again it doesnt matter too much. I am looking for a good performance and if we can do that it’ll be a good game.

“I wan us to get a good run out and test ourselves against better opposition. We’ve worked on a few things in training so I will be looking for them to put it into game situations and as long as we get no injuries I will be happy.”

The Squad
