Varley’s Views on Braintree
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on August 1, 2010
Just three days after their last friendly Ian Varley takes his side over to Essex with a friendly against Braintree tomorrow.
It won’t be an easy game for Ian’s side as Braintree have achieved promotion in the last six seasons on the spin.
Giving his view on the game exclusively to the Official Site, he said: “Let’s not take anything away from Braintree, they are a good side and have achieved six straight promotions and that is a great achievement.
“They should provide us with a good game and a good test but it is a game where I will be looking at several other players.
“Being a combination team they are not going to offer anything like Millwall did on Thursday evening but as I said they should provide us with a good test and one I am looking forward too.”
The game gives the manager a chance to give some of his side a much needed ninety minutes, as they look to build their match sharpness.
He added: “The main aim of the game for me is to give some more players 90 minutes and again look at a few things.
“It is difficult to get continuity with team selection with people being away on holiday but that can’t be helped. I am eighty percent sure if the team I will name come the first game of the season against Charlton. However several players still have the opportunity to change my mind and stake a case for a place in the first team.”
One player who is certain to get more game time is summer signing Laura Jeffery as she steps up her return from a long term injury.
Talking about Laura, he said: “I will definitely look to give Laura more minutes again as she looks to regain her match fitness.
“That also goes for several others who have not trained or played as much. As always the performance is key but to me it is more important that we get a positive result as well.”
