Maidstone Town 1-5 Gills Ladies Reserves

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on August 10, 2010

The Reserves remain unbeaten this pre-season thanks to a comfortable if not convincing 5-1 win this evening.

The Gills fell behind just before half time against the run of play despite creating a number of chances, Whitney Judd netted the equaliser on the stroke of half time.

In the second half goals from Tami who scored a brace and two well taken goals from Kim Bolden and Danielle Carlton added a gloss to the score line.

The Gills were on the attack from the first minute and Amy Russ had the first shot on goal inside the first minute, but she failed to threaten the keeper.

In the 5th minute the Gills had another good chance to score, Danielle Carlton sent a cross towards Anelle Massey at the far post, and her first time shot went just wide of the keepers near post.

A minute later a cross into the area by Danielle Carlton was headed against her own bar by a Maidstone defender. The ball then fell to Anelle Massey but her shot went over the cross bar.

Three minutes had further elapsed when a fantastic cross by Massey was missed by Kylie Overton and Kim Bolden racing into the area at the far post was unlucky not to connect with the ball.

Maidstone Town had their first effort on Jessica Nunn’s goal in the 10th minute but the tame shot failed to test the young keeper.

The Gills then had their best chance to take the lead when a Carlton pass split the Maidstone defence. Charlotte Abbott raced through on goal and saw her effort tipped onto the cross bar and away from danger.

In the 15th minute Anelle Massey then played another great defence splitting pass. Kylie Overton raced onto the ball rounded the on rushing goalkeeper, but put her shot wide with an empty net seemingly at her mercy.

Five minutes later and Charlotte Abbott crossed for Anelle Massey; she did well with defenders around her to find Kylie Overton. Her pass to Whitney Judd was laid back to Kim Bolden but her shot was off target.

The Gills were creating chance after chance and the Gills defence were rarely troubled by the Maidstone Town forwards.

In the 25th minute Charlotte Abbott picked the ball up wide on the left, and drove into the Town area and from an acute angle forced the keeper to tip the ball round the near post for a corner.

Ten minutes before half time and good play from Abbott found Anelle Massey on the edge of the Maidstone area, but her shot went wide.

Massey was then fouled four minutes later which lead to Danielle Carlton testing the keeper from distance from the free kick.

The Gills were then caught by a sucker punch as the defence was split apart by a long ball for the first time in the match. It broke to the Maidstone Town striker who stroked a nicely placed shot past Jessica Nunn from 18 yards out.

Just as the manager was preparing his half time team walk the Gills went up the other end and scored the goal their play had threatened all half.

A Danielle Carlton corner was headed against the bar by a Maidstone defender, the ball fell to Whitney Judd who volleyed in her second goal in two games from eight yards out.

Half Time 1-1

The half time team talk had the desired effect as the Gills came out in the second half and took more of the chances that they created.

It took them just two minutes to take the lead a ball by Danielle Carlton found Tami in acres of space on the left wing. She took on and beat the right back before hitting a shot past the keeper at the near post to make it 2-1.

In the 54th minute Carlton was again the provider to Amy Russ who hit a shot from 18 yards that just went wide.

Just after the hour mark Amy Taylor crossed into the Maidstone area she found Kylie Overton unmarked six yards out. With the striker caught in two minds with what to do she headed the ball wide of the near post.

Two minutes later and it was 3-1 to the Gills, Danielle Carlton hit a shot from 25 yards out that went straight into the roof of the net past the despairing keeper.

With 15 minutes left on the clock Carlton played a ball wide to Amy Taylor she hit a shot from distance that flew past the far post.

In the 78th minute the Gills went 4-1 up when Tami netted her second goal of the night. Whitney Judd picked the ball up and made a run down the right wing, her cross into the area came back off the cross bar and left Tami with the simple task of heading into the empty net.

Two minutes later Anelle Massey stepped up and hit a well struck free kick that the keeper had to gather at the second attempt.

With the clock ticking down towards 90 minutes the Gills rounded off the scoring thanks to Captain Kim Bolden.

As she cut inside from the left wing, she sent a cross into the area that evaded everyone and bounced into the top corner.

It was a good run out for the Reserve side who maintain their unbeaten run this pre-season despite a less than convincing performance.
