West Ham Reserves 0-0 Gills Ladies Reserves
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on August 23, 2010
The Reserves maintained their unbeaten run in pre-season with a solid but unspectacular draw on Sunday afternoon.
The game ended 0-0 and despite the Ladies being below par they could and should have won the game.
They had one goal disallowed in the 60th minute for offside, Kylie Overton put the ball in the back of the net and it was ruled out despite the fact the touch before Kylie’s came from a defender.
Charlotte Abbott also missed a glorious chance as she headed wide from a Whitney Judd corner in the 20th minute.
The Gills came out and looked the better side from the off but West Ham showed their experience by slowly began to assert themselves on the game.
They began to pass the ball around and make it a little bit more difficult for the Gills to get on the ball and create any real chances of note.
The Gills did create a good chance midway through the first half when Charlotte Abbott headed wide of the near post from a Whitney Judd corner.
Shortly after and Becky Taylor also headed over the cross bar after rising unchallenged in the 30th minute but, she couldn’t quite keep her header on target.
Half time 0-0
The second half continued in much the same fashion as the first with the Gills not really creating any chances of note and West Ham continuing to have most of the possession.
Although the Gills did step it up a gear attacking wise and for all their good build up play in the middle of the park they were lacking that cutting edge required to finish off the chances.
Both defences were coping well with the play and the Gills back line including Natalie Farbrace for the first time looked comfortable and assured.
The Gills should have gone home with the win when Kylie Overton saw a goal disallowed for offside on the hour mark. This was harsh on the Gills striker as the ball had in fact come off a West Ham player before she tucked it into the back of the net.
In the 80th minute Ruth Jackson made a fantastic save and ensured the Reserves unbeaten run remained intact. A long range shot was riffled in from the edge of the box and she did well to tip it over the bar for a corner.
Despite the fact that the Gills didn’t score against West Ham and the performance wasn’t the best, the manager will have learnt a lot going into the new season.
