Varley: It was a good result
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on August 31, 2010
Ian Varley was delighted by his sides battling qualities on Sunday afternoon as they came from two down to draw with Millwall.
The Ladies looked dead and buried at 2-0 down but showed the battling qualities that saw them promoted last season to bring it back to 2-2.
Talking after the game, Ian said: “It was a good result and a better performance, even though were 2-0 down it is a much better performance over all.
“We said at half time that we were playing better this week and we were losing so that is the difference between the last two games.
“I thought we played some good stuff, I think we went back to basics today after last week and that was key today. We didn’t try to do much over complicated stuff; everyone knew the formation and stuck to their jobs.
“I think once we got the one goal and changed the formation to 4-4-2 and got the other goal back. I think we then played really well and should have won the game.
It showed great nerve and resilience from the Ladies to come from two goals down to go on and get a point from the game and Ian was delighted.
He added: “I think that is the biggest thing that people will look at to be fair. We should have probably won it 3-2 and to be fair to the Assistant Referee it is difficult to be fair, you can’t keep up with play when someone is shooting from 60 odd yards out.”
The fact that the Gills are unbeaten in their first two games of the season will give the Ladies confidence for the rest of the season.
“We are undefeated so that is a good start to the season. We won last week and didn’t play well and then this week we have played well and got a good draw against Millwall.
“Millwall are far better than most teams in our League, and we will take a bit more belief from that. I don’t think we had enough belief in the first half.
“We had a chat with them at half time and the belief came back especially when you get a goal it comes back, and we really started to rattle them then. Confidence should be pretty high for the visit of Pompey next weekend.”
