Gills Ladies 0-1 Yeovil Ladies

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 26, 2010

Gills Ladies slipped to their second successive League defeat on Sunday afternoon in wet and windy conditions at Martin Grove.

In truth it was a game that the Gills had the better of the chances and the play for the most part, but were caught by a sucker punch in the 87th from Jemma Tewkesbury.

The Gills were lucky not to fall behind in the first minute when Lauren Williams went down under a challenge from Helen Bleazard, Bleazard raced down the wing before crossing into the area and Terri Trowbridge saw her shot go wide.

In the opening stages it was a battle of the midfields and despite the early chance for the Glovers it took until the 14th minute for there to be another effort on goal.

It came from Yeovil as Helen Bleazard made a run down the left wing and hit a ball across the box and under a challenge from Stacey McConville Laura Bray saw her volley from close range hit the defender and cannon back off the cross bar.

The Gills then had their best spell of pressure from the start of the game Ashlee Hincks found Jodie Mugford, but her touch wasn’t the best but it went out for a corner. The Corner came in and the keeper made a complete mess of it and it went out for another corner. It was sent into the area and landed at the foot of Sian Cheedy but she couldn’t quite get a shot away at goal.

In the 23rd minute a long ball from Sarah Jones was almost the undoing for Yeovil as Ashlee Hincks raced into the area and hit a shot just wide.

A minute later and Jemma Tewkesbury got into the Gills area and hit a shot at goal; it took a deflection off Sarah Jones but was comfortable for Becky Spencer.

In the 25th minute a good ball from Danni Farmer found Ashlee Hincks and she advanced on the Yeovil area, with no tackle forthcoming she hit a shot that flashed agonisingly wide of the far post after a good save from the keeper.

The resulting corner saw Stacey McConville put the keeper under pressure; she dropped the ball into the six yard area. The midfielder couldn’t quite get a shot away on the Yeovil goal as she was falling backwards.

In the 35th minute a great passing move by the Gills was almost finished off by Natalie Crinean. Jodie Mugford found Danielle Carlton who played in Crinean. She raced forward into the area and unleashed a shot that was well saved by Rachel Simkin in the Yeovil goal.

Shortly before half time Mugford was again provider as she played in Natalie Crinean, but despite a deflection the strikers shot was easy for the keeper to gather.

Half Time 0-0

Yeovil would have been much the happier side to be level at half time given the chances that the Gills created. As the second half started the Gills were in the ascendancy once more and could have taken the lead two minutes into the second half.

In the 48th minute Jodie Mugford played a great pass to Natalie Crinean she turned the defender and hit a shot that was well saved by the keeper.  The ball came back to Crinean who set the ball to Danni Farmer and her shot was saved by Rachel Simkin.

In the 53rd minute a ball over the top saw Sarah Jones get outmuscled by Helen Bleazard who then raced into the area but her shot was well saved by the out rushing Becky Spencer.

The match then saw both teams trying efforts from distance because of the deteriorating weather conditions. Ashlee Hincks was the first to sting the palms of Simkin from distance before Stacey Pearson tested Becky Spencer from distance.

In the 71st minute the game sprung into life as both the Gills and Yeovil created chances to score at both ends.

First a Stacey McConville cross into the area found Danni Farmer; she turned and hit a shot that was deflected wide and away up field.

The long clearance found Tewkesbury who had the beating of the Gills defence and she hit a shot that went over the Gills bar.

In the 74th minute a great pass found substitute Laura Jeffery, she turned the defence and unleashed a shot that crashed back off the post and away from the danger zone.

Rachel Simkin then came to Yeovil’s rescue in the 77th minute after Farmer found Ashlee Hincks; she unleashed a shot that was tipped around the post by the keeper.

In the 79th minute the Gills had a threat of what was to come as a long ball found Helen Bleazard who unleashed a strike that was well saved at her near post by Becky Spencer.

As the clocked ticked down Yeovil hit the Gills with a sucker punch that they could never recover from.

With 87 minutes on the clock substitute Anusia Rourke crossed the ball into the Gills area and Tewkesbury turned the Gills defence and hit a shot. The ball hit the near post and rolled along the line before going into the back of the net at the far post.

With so little time on the clock the Gills had no way of getting back into the game, and lost a game that they didn’t deserve to lose.
