Varley: It was devastating
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 27, 2010
Manager Ian Varley was devastated at the final whistle on Sunday afternoon after seeing his side lose to Yeovil thanks to a late goal.
It was a game that the Gills dominated bar the first ten minutes and probably didn’t deserve to lose with the chances they created.
Giving his views on the game, Ian said: “It was devastating today as we had dominated the game but crucially missed our chances.
“Fair play to Yeovil they had very few attempts but one went in. It was one of those days in front of goal and it is just not happening at the minute. I thought my forward players were excellent today it was just one of those days.”
The Ladies didn’t take their chances on the day but that is down to a combination of luck and coming up against a keeper who was in fine form.
He added: “As I said apart from the first ten minutes I think we dominated the game. Again Yeovil are an average side who work hard and play for each other.
“Yes I know everyone will be saying we are not beating these average sides which we aren’t but I am yet to see a team in this League who to me stands out. Once we get going I firmly believe we have a great chance.”
Yeovil came and set up to frustrate the Gills like most teams away from home and it worked as they caught the Gills on the counter attack.
He said: “As I said it is another average team who set their stall out and look to break quickly. It is really frustrating as these teams are no better than us, but they are picking up the points so something isn’t right. I am not one who bemoans bad luck as I always think it will even itself out across the season.”
Once again the Gills back line looked solid and for the second game in a row the centre half pairing looked as solid as it has all season.
Ian added: “Defensively again we looked solid and that’s without putting all ten people behind the ball.
“We have one of the best keepers in the Country and that gives us so much confidence at the back. Our distribution needs to be better at times but as a unit we look solid.”
The Gills may have lost but Ian isn’t getting down heartened by the run that his side are on just yet as the season has still got a long way to go.
He said: “I am certainly not going to get down hearted as a win on Sunday and we would have been second. If we win our remaining 14 games then we could be Champions that is the way I look at it all really.”
