Varley: We have a good opportunity
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on October 23, 2010
The Ladies head to Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon looking to pick up their second away win of the season.
They go into the game in fine form having won their last two games and moved up to fourth in the League with the win on Sunday.
Manager Ian Varley is not taking the game lightly though as he prepares his side for what will be a tough game.
He said: “It is difficult when we play from home sometimes, but we have to change that soon really, we are happy at home but need to go away and start picking some points up.
“We have a good opportunity to do it on Sunday and hopefully we can come away with the three points that keep us at the top end of the table.”
Queens Park Rangers maybe second bottom in the League but that could be a bit of a false position as they have played fewer games than anyone else.
He added: “They haven’t won any game as yet and I know they have been missing a few players so they might have a bit of a stronger team on Sunday.
“We have just got to worry about ourselves really and if we play as well as we did in the first half last week then I should think we will win the game.”
The manager is well aware that at some stage QPR will end their losing streak and that he wants to make sure it isn’t against the Gills.
He said: “They are going to score and they are going to end that run, but I think if we approach it properly then we should come away with three points and that is the aim.
“Everyone is buzzing you can tell that from training people are getting here and people are working hard to get into the team.
“Sunday freshened a few things up and it may have caused a bit of a stir but we needed to do that, people have worked hard in training and not got the reward.
“Sunday was I think about rewarding people who have worked hard in training, not necessarily at the expense of people who played badly because those who were left out have not played badly.
“I might freshen it up again on Sunday but at the end of the day if we win every Sunday that is all that matters.”
Ian has a big and talented squad and he admits that it is hard to keep everyone happy and that it is his job to try and do that.
He added: “It is all about getting game time; I can’t expect people to sit on the bench for eight or nine weeks at a time.
“They come to training and they deserve a chance, and it is a squad game people will get injured and suspended. Jodie goes away in a couple of weeks and somebody will come in there and keep Jodie out of the team that is how we work.”
