Queens Park Rangers Ladies 2-0 Gills Ladies
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on October 24, 2010
Gillingham Ladies slipped to a disappointing defeat away at Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon.
Despite dominating large parts of the game they fell behind in the 18th minute when Sandra Scalzi found the net.
As the Gills pushed for an equaliser they were caught with a sucker punch from Beth Curtis to hand QPR their first win of the season with just ten minutes of the game remaining.
The Gills were terrorising the QPR defence with Vicky Ashton-Jones having the beating of the full back time and time again.
Half chances came and went through Ashlee Hincks, Lauren Phillips and Danielle Carlton as the Gills goal scoring touch deserted them.
The QPR goal came from a long clearance out of the back, when the Gills defence allowed a goal kick to bounce. The initial shot was brilliantly saved by Becky Spencer in the Gills goal but the rebound fell to Sandra Scalzi who slotted home from close range.
The Gills continued to press the ball well through Jodie Mugford in the midfield as well as create half chances for the strikers through Danni Farmer and Danielle Carlton.
In the second half it was like a totally different Gillingham team came out as they were virtually nonexistent from the off.
The best chance of the second fell to substitute Natalie Crinean who sent her shot high over the bar from close range.
As the Gills huffed and puffed and tried to find their way back into the game they were getting no reward in front of goal and ultimately got caught on the counter attack.
With just ten minutes left on the clock QPR secured their first win of the season as they broke with the Gills chasing the game.
The ball broke to Beth Curtis who showed brilliant awareness and calmness under pressure to lift the ball over Becky Spencer for an expert finish.
The defeat leaves the Gills in mid table with seven points from their opening six games of their debut season in the Southern Premiership.
