Jones:I have settled in really quickly
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on October 27, 2010
Sarah Jones may have only been playing for Gills Ladies for a matter of months but she already feels like she has been here for years.
The Central defender arrived just after the season started and has brought a calming influence to the defence and a unique fashion sense to the training ground.
Talking about how it is going at Gills Ladies, Sarah said: “I have settled in really quickly, I am getting used to the way each player plays and the team as a whole.
“I am really enjoying it, it is as if I have been at the club for years, which is a really nice feeling especially when you are the newbie.”
The defender has certainly picked up on the training ground banter quickly even though she is the one that it is normally aimed at.
She added: “The banter is great. It is mostly at my expense but I can take it, in fact I am pretty immune to it now.
“I guess as I am the newbie I am an easy target. I may have worn socks with a ladder in once or twice a t-shirt with a hole in under the arm so I can’t really complain that I am getting ‘ripped’ for wearing dodgy training gear literally.”
In the last few weeks it looked as though the Ladies had turned the corner in terms of form and Sarah hopes this is the case.
She said: “The last two games were excellent before QPR were excellent. There were good performances and results to match. It shows we can compete and have the edge over the better teams in the League, now we just need to succeed in doing so consistently.”
Consistency seems to be the key words at the moment and once the team finds that consistency they will move up the League.
“Consistency is the key all over the field. I think it is just coincidence that one game it seems that the defence does well and in another the strikers.
“We don’t plan it with each other so one week the defence play well and have a good write up in the match report, then the strikers the week after to keep everyone happy!
“On our day, with everyone playing to their potential we look a real threat going forward and solid in defence. This was the case in the Brighton fixture, and it shows in the result.”
This weekend sees the Ladies take on Nottingham Forest in the League Cup, unfortunately for Sarah she is cup tied but she has a unique insight on Forest as she played them earlier in the season.
“She said: I am so gutted that I can’t play. I played Forest with Millwall a few months back though, so I can give a bit of an inside view of their strengths and weaknesses. Although I am really gutted that I am cup tied for the whole competition as I believe it is one we can go far in.
“If everyone puts in one hundred percent, play the football we have been doing the past few games but put away our chances then we’re in with a great shout.
“We will be the underdogs and they won’t know anything about us so we’ve got nothing to lose. It’ll be a great game to watch, which is exactly what I will be doing.”
