Varley: We want to test ourselves
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on October 31, 2010
Gills Ladies face arguably their toughest test of the season so far as Nottingham Forest travel to Martin Grove for the League Cup tie.
The Ladies are the underdogs for the game as they take on their higher ranked opponents from the National Premiership.
Talking ahead of the game Manager Ian Varley said: “We try to do well in these competitions because we want to test ourselves the best teams in the Country.
“Forest will be no different and we have found out a little bit about them, they are a good team and don’t concede a lot of goals.
“They are a solid side and it is going to be tough, we are missing a couple of players so it is going to be difficult. I am confident in the squad that we have got though that we can still go and win the game.”
Forest currently sit third in the National Premiership and Ian knows that his players will have to be on top of their game for the full ninety minutes.
He added: “League positions don’t matter when it comes to knock out cup games and the Leagues are of a similar level.
“It isn’t quite like playing Arsenal as the Super League is completely different the National, Southern and Northern Premiership’s aren’t too dissimilar.
“Forest are a solid team and they are doing well in the National league and they have been around a while. They are expected to win and we are under no illusions that they are expected to win and hopefully we can give a good performance. If we can do that and play to our maximum and hopefully we can get a result.”
The pressure is off the Ladies this weekend so they can go out and play their attacking style of football a little more relaxed.
He said: “The pressure is on them as they are expected to win and they will come down expecting to win the game.
“They should win the game by all accounts as they are at that level for a reason and we are relatively new to this level and success.
“It is a good chance to test ourselves and hopefully we will get the right result on Sunday afternoon in the Cup.”
