London Corinthians 1-7 Gills Ladies

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on November 21, 2010

Gillingham Ladies began their defence of the Kent Cup with an emphatic victory over London Corinthians on Sunday afternoon.

The goals were shared around the team as Natalie Crinean, Danni Farmer, Lauren Phillips and Jodie Mugford all netted in the first half.  Danni Farmer also netted in the second half as well as a brace on her debut for new signing Leah Jones.

Ian Varley shuffled his pack slightly as he gave players in need of game time some valuable minutes on the pitch, as he looked ahead to next Sundays tie with Charlton.

The Gills took the lead in the 11th minute after good work from Jodie Mugford set Natalie Crinean free. The midfielder played a fantastic ball in between the centre back and the full back and Crinean showed great composure to slot home past the keeper.

Corinthians were on level terms somewhat surprising in the 13th minute when a lack of concentration and a slip from Sian Cheedy allowed the forward to slot home.

It proved to be unlucky 13 for Corinthians as the Gills stepped up a gear and ran away with the game from then on.

Danni Farmer netted her first of the game in the 24th minute when she scored a fine individual effort from range that flew in past the keepers reach.

It was 3-1 just ten minutes later when Jodie Mugford got her name on the score sheet and it was Natalie Crinean who returned the favour with the assist.

A corner from Danni Farmer was half cleared and Natalie Crinean sent the ball back across the box and Jodie Mugford turned the ball into the back of the net.

On the stroke of half time striker Lauren Phillips made it 4-1 when new signing Leah Jones broke free and sent a great cross into the box. Lauren latched onto the ball and finished expertly with aplomb into the top corner on her left foot.

Half Time 1-4

In the second half the Gills continued to press and take the game to Corinthians and seal their place in the semi finals with style.

On the hour mark the Gills made it 5-1 thanks to a frankly superb finish from midfielder Danni Farmer. She smashed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the Corinthians box for her second goal of the game.

Then came the Leah Jones show, she only joined the Gills from Millwall and Friday and proved an instant hit with two late goals.

In the 66th minute Jodie Mugford played another fantastic ball behind the full back. Substitute Deanna Cooper showed the defence a clean pair of heels and crossed for Leah Jones to score her first goal in Gills colours.

Jones then rounded the scoring off in the 72nd minute when the ball broke to her in the box and she slid in and poked the ball past the keeper.

It was a great all-round team performance as the Gills moved into the semi finals of the Kent Cup for the second year in a row.
