Varley: It was a good win

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on November 22, 2010

Gillingham Ladies kicked off their defence of the Kent Cup in style yesterday afternoon as they beat London Corinthians 7-1.

The game saw the Ladies share the goals around and put in a performance that continued on from their performance in the friendly against Chelsea.

Talking after the final whistle a delighted Ian Varley, said: “Yes it was a good win and I am delighted we have got our Kent Cup defence off to a flying start.

“The most pleasing thing for me was that all the attacking players got on the score sheet and that should give them confidence going into next weekend.”

Although the sides were mismatched in terms of quality Ian couldn’t fault his players work rate in ensuring they came away with the right result.

He added: “It was not even a contest today and I’d expect us to control these types of games. I am very disappointed that we conceded it was just a slip and one of those but we should be keeping a clean sheet against that only got into our box five times.

“It bordered on the ridiculous at times as their back four and five midfielders didn’t move from the edge of their box which made it difficult at times. Having said that I thought we showed great patience especially second half and created good opportunities.”

Ian was also pleased to see Leah Jones score twice on her debut after signing from Millwall on Friday afternoon.

He said: “I have said before that I am so excited that Leah has decided to join us and she showed her quality today with two good goals. She has everything you need as an attacking player and I have no doubt she will be a major success for us.”
