Weather Frustrates the Ladies
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on November 29, 2010
Yet again Gillingham Ladies have been frustrated by the weather as the match against Charlton was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
In recent weeks the Gills have had to endure a tough time due to the weather, with games against Cardiff and West Ham have fallen foul of the weather.
It now means that the Ladies have not played in the League since a 2-0 defeat away at Queens Park Rangers on October 24th, well over a month ago.
Since the League Cup defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest a week later the Gills have managed just one competitive fixture.
That was the Kent Cup Quarter Final against a game which the two sides were mismatch and the Gills outplayed their opponents and came away with a 7-1 victory.
Last season the Gills suffered a similar fate in terms of games being called off, albeit for waterlogged pitches rather than frozen playing surfaces.
Talking about the number of games called off manager Ian Varley said: “It is a frustrating time of year for all teams. Everyone just wants to go out there and play football.
“No matter what you do in terms of training, it is frustrating when you can’t go out on a Sunday afternoon and play football, not just for the players but for the coaching staff as well.
“Last season we had a fixture pile up later in the season due to the number of games postponed in November and December. It looks as though this season is going to be no different the way that the postponements are starting to mount up.”
With games called off up and down the Country last weekend the Gills did manage to play some football. They travelled to Barnet to take on the National Premiership side in a hastily arranged friendly.
The game was played behind closed doors but we can tell you that the performance of the Ladies was very impressive and Deanna Cooper was on the score sheet for the Gills.
Giving his opinion on the work out Ian added “I would like to say a big thank you to Barnet for arranging the game at such short notice.
“It was a great work out for my players and I was impressed with the standard of football that we have played and there were a number of good performances, which I am really pleased about.”
