Gills Ladies 1-2 Keynsham Ladies

Gills Ladies slipped to their 4th League defeat of the season despite taking the lead against Keynsham on Sunday afternoon.

It looked good for the ladies in the 49th minute when striker Laura Jeffery tucked home from the edge of the area. Keynsham pulled level through Captain Louise Hutton in the 55th minute before Polly Wardle gave them victory in the 73rd minute.

The Gills were on the attack as early as the first minute when Natalie Crinean and Leah Jones combined to put in Lauren Williams who put her shot wide.

In the 8th minute the Gills went close to opening the scoring. Danni Farmer played the ball to Leah Jones who burst through the Keynsham defence; the keeper came racing out of her box and made the challenge as Jones tried to take the ball round her.

Good interplay in the 10th minute between Vicky Ashton-Jones, Laura Jeffery and Natalie Crinean saw the striker burst into the box and force a corner. The resulting corner midfielder Jodie Mugford headed wide.

Keynsham’s first chance came in the 15th minute when a long ball over the top set Polly Wardle free, she burst into the Gills area before shooting over Becky Spencer’s cross bar.

In the 21st minute Jodie Mugford touched the ball on to Danni Farmer who let fly from distance but saw the keeper easily save her shot.

With 25 minutes on the clock a Leah Jones cross found Laura Jeffery who slashed her shot and the clearance fell to Deanna Cooper. She drove from the midfield but hitting a shot from distance straight at the keeper.

Just before the half hour mark another long ball undid the Gills defence and Wardle broke into the box before firing a shot straight at Becky Spencer.

Shortly before half time Lauren Williams played a ball to Natalie Crinean who burst into the Keynsham area before firing into the side netting.

Half Time 0-0

In the second half the Gills came out on the attack and it seemed to work as they took the lead after just four minutes.

Natalie Crinean fired a shot at goal which was well saved by Amber Thornbil the ball rebounded to the edge of the area, where Laura Jeffery fired a shot low into the bottom corner.

In the 53rd minute Wardle played a ball across the box and just as Naomi Clipston went to pull the trigger Deanna Cooper made a superb last ditch tackle to clear the ball from danger.

Two minutes later however and Keynsham were back on level terms when the Gills conceded a corner. The resulting corner was half cleared to the edge of the area where Louise Hutton hit a shot that hit the inside of the right upright before crossing the line.

Shortly before the hour mark Leah Jones crossed into the box and substitute Lauren Phillips header went wide and was cleared from danger.

In the 68th minute Danni Farmer fed the ball to Natalie Crinean who broke down the left wing before firing her shot into the side netting.

In the 73rd minute Keynsham went ahead for the first time in the match, the Gills made a hash of a routine clearance. The ball was crossed in from the right wing and Polly Wardle fired home past Becky Spencer from 12 yards.

Three minutes later the Gills had a great chance to get back on level terms. Deanna Cooper played a superb ball to Leah Jones who latched onto it before firing just wide of the far post.

After that the Gills huffed and puffed as they went in search of the equaliser but they couldn’t quite find that killer finish.

The defeat was harsh on the Gills who played well for ninety minutes, but they couldn’t quite take their chances to take something from the game.
