Phillips: I was extremely happy

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on January 31, 2011

Lauren Phillips marked her return to the Gills side on Sunday afternoon by bagging a brace against QPR.

The striker was deployed on the right wing but it seemed to have the desired effect as she scored two and had a hand in the other.

Talking after the game, she said: “I was extremely happy with getting two goals today. It is always nice to get one especially after not scoring for a while but to get two it is always a bonus.”

More important for Potter was for the Gills to pick up the points no matter what the score line or performance was like.

She added: “It was extremely important to get three points today, especially off teams that are in and around us and with the league looking the way it is.

“It’s anyone’s season to loose and we want to make sure that we are not in that position. With the way we have been playing recently, being the better team but yet not picking up the points, it’s been frustrating for everyone.

“Eventually good things will come our way and hopefully with the continued good performances from the team we can get back in the habit of winning. So to combine a good performance, get three goals and get all three points was brilliant!”

This season has been slightly frustrating for Lauren having to come in and out of the side but she remains committed to winning a regular place in the side.

She said: “It has been a frustrating season for me so far with not playing consistently, getting injured, and then being on the bench for a while. No one likes to be in that position but its games like today where you have to take your chance and hopefully I did that(fingers crossed)

“Playing out on the right seems to be a good omen for me. Hopefully this will help me to build on what has been an up and down season and look to push on from here.

“Reading is a big game next weekend. It will be a good test for us, but one I think we can rise to. We have the talent in the squad throughout, we have been putting in good performances, but we now need to be consistent in doing so, finish our chances and I really do think we can get a result.”
