Varley: It was a good result

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on January 31, 2011

Manager Ian Varley was delighted to see his side beat QPR and score three goals and keep a clean sheet on Sunday.

Lauren Phillips scored a brace and striker Natalie Crinean netted with a bullet header to give his side the three points.

Talking after the game, he said: “It was a good result and that was the most important thing today for us.

“Getting the three points moves us into double figures in terms of points and it distances ourselves from the bottom that little bit. It is such a tight League and we have to take points where we can and we deserved that win today.

“We deserved the comfortable 3-0 win because we have been threatening to score goals for weeks but it didn’t happen.

“I was pleased that when we got one we went on and got another one, 3-0 up at half time and we didn’t really want half time to come. I cannot fault the attitude and commitment from my players throughout the game today.”

Natalie Crinean and Lauren Phillips took their goals well on the afternoon and Ian was delighted that the pair was on the score sheet.

He added: “Lauren has come in and done a great job, she has been a bit unfortunate in recent weeks not to be playing.

“She isn’t blessed with pace but she knows how to play the game, for both the goals she has got herself in the right position and followed the ball into the area.

“They were two good goals and Nat has scored a brilliant header, I don’t remember if we have ever scored a header from a cross.

“I thought going forward in the first half we looked a threat and we played some good stuff which has pleased me.”

Ian was just as delighted to keep the clean sheet and for his defenders who also had a good game and defended well.

He said: “I am pleased with the clean sheet and I am pleased with how we defended and approached the second half.  I am pleased with how we worked and closed down, it was a difficult pitch to play on but like I said the result was the most important thing.”
