Varls reflects on the Hammers game
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on February 15, 2011
Manager Ian Varley was disappointed to see his side lose on Sunday afternoon away at West Ham Ladies.
However, he was honest in his assessment that his side weren’t really at the races against the Hammers.
Talking about the defeat, he said: “To be brutally honest we weren’t at it on Sunday.
“We were poor both in possession and out of possession and it was a shadow of our recent performances. Having said that West Ham weren’t much better as all they seemed to do was foul and get the ball forward as quick as possible mostly by long balls.
“Sometimes I think we should be more direct as it seems to work but having said that take away the two goals from set pieces which were bitterly disappointed about the game probably ends 0-0. But again it didn’t quite go for us and we came away with nothing.”
When Danni Farmer got through one on one with the West Ham keeper it became a match defining moment, something Ian agrees with.
He added: “Farms knows she should of probably scored but it didn’t happen for us.
“She was probably our biggest attacking threat in the game and deserved to score but it wasn’t to be. The keeper deserves credit though as it was a fantastic save.
“I’m pretty sure if we had of got it back to 2-1 so early in the second half we would have gone on to get something out of the game.”
Once again the Ladies created chances in the game, and bar the two set pieces that they conceded from the defence was rock solid once again.
He said: “We didn’t create as many as we have been lately but still created a number of chances to score some goals and on another day we might of done.
” The biggest thing is we’ve lost to two poor goals and that’s concerning. Its not as if they’ve cut us apart as they didn’t all day, we’ve just got to stop giving silly free kicks away and concentrate on all set pieces.
“Again I thought the back 4 were excellent, very solid throughout which is a good base to build upon.”
