Rusthall Ladies 0-5 Gills Ladies Reserves

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on March 6, 2011

Gills Ladies Reserves moved into the final of the Kent Plate after a resounding 5-0 victory over Rusthall on Sunday afternoon.

Amazingly the first half was goalless with all five goals coming in an improved second half display from the Reserves.

Kylie Overton netted a brace including a spectacular over head kick. Charlotte Abbott also scored a world class effort and there were goals for Leah Jones and Temi.

The first half took a while to get going as the Gills settled in to playing a diamond formation and getting used to the conditions.

It was Rusthall who had the first effort on goal but it was a tame effort easily dealt with by Les Kay in the Gills goal.

On 13 minutes Anelle Massey fed Kylie Overton who back heeled the ball to Leah Jones who raced into the area but hit her shot just wide of the far post.

Two minutes later a Leah Jones free-kick found its way to Amy Russ who smashed a shot just wide from distance.

Anelle Massey sent a pin point ball into the Rusthall box on 18 minutes, it landed on the head of Kylie Overton but she couldn’t keep her header on target.

Rusthall were awarded a free-kick on 20 minutes, the Gills failed to clear their lines and just as the Rusthall striker went to pull the trigger Whitney Judd made a great last ditch tackle.

The ball was in the back of the Rusthall net in the 26th minute but the referee ruled it out for an infringement. Leah Jones rose highest to head home Kylie Overton cross at the far post but it didn’t count.

A minute later Leah Jones was in again thanks to a great through ball from Anelle Massey, but the winger pulled her shot wide.

Jones was tearing the Rusthall defence to shreds and in the 30th minute she crossed for Whitney Judd who fired her shot wide with the goal at her mercy.

On the stroke of half time Kylie Overton forced the keeper into a great save with a shot from just inside the area.

Half time 0-0

In the second half the Gills came out attacking up the hill and took the chances they created to move into the Kent Plate final.

They created a number of chances in the opening minutes of the half through Kim Bolden, Charlotte Abbott and Anelle Massey.

The Gills first goal came in the 53rd minute, Amy Russ hit a shot from distance which was well saved by the keeper, but Leah Jones was following up and tapped home from close range.

Two minutes later and it was 2-0 to the Reserves. A game of head tennis in the Rusthall area resulted in Leah Jones heading the ball to Kylie Overton who acrobatically volleyed in a spectacular second goal for the Reserves.

In the 66th minute Whitney Judd had two good chances, seeing one well saved by the keeper and the other go straight at the keeper without to much trouble.

The game was as good as over in the 70th minute when Charlotte Abbott made it 3-0. Whitney Judd teed up the midfielder who rifled her effort into the top corner from 20 yards with some aplomb.

Substitute Temi made it 4-0 in the 81st minute. The impressive Leah Jones cut down the left wing before playing the ball across the six yard box for Temi to fire home.

Three minutes later and the Reserves put the icing on the cake with a well taken fifth goal. Charlotte Abbott played the ball into Kylie Overton in the Rusthall area. She turned the defender who was paying close attention to her and fired her shot into the bottom corner.

The game finished with half chances for Les Kay and Temi but neither could add to the score line and make it a half dozen.

The Reserves now move into the Kent Plate final against Long Lane on Thursday April 14th as they look to complete the double.
