Varley: Goals win games
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on March 26, 2011
Ian Varley takes his side on yet another long away trip this weekend as they travel to Portsmouth in the League.
Despite seeing his side slip to defeat last weekend at home to Colchester Ian is upbeat about his side’s chances on the south coast this weekend.
Speaking ahead of the game, he said: “It is always important to bounce back after a disappointing after a disappointing result and performance and hopefully we can do that on Sunday.
“To be honest the League is so tight at the moment that I never really take much notice of other teams results.
“Everyone is capable of taking points off each other and that has happened all season. There is no doubt Sunday is a difficult game as Portsmouth are a good team but so are we and we’ll be going there to try and get the three points.”
The Ladies played Portsmouth early in the season and it was a tight game then and Ian is expecting it to be the same this time round.
He added: “We played them very early in the season and I am sure a lot has changed in both sides regarding personnel as we have lost a couple of players to Super League teams and so have they.
“As I have said before all teams in this League are evenly matched and it’s just about who can perform the better on the day and be more consistent throughout the season.
“It is no secret that we have struggled to score goals this season but we have the players who can do that it’s just putting it into games which we have not done.
“It is certainly not for a lack of effort and I am sure the goals will fly in for us sooner rather than later. They need too though as goals win games. “
