Varley: We need to make our own luck
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on March 28, 2011
Ian Varley was pleased with his side’s performance on Sunday afternoon on the South Coast despite coming away with nothing to show for their efforts.
It could have been a different story had a Danni Farmer penalty gone in with the scores still goalless but that sums up the Ladies luck this season.
Speaking after the final whistle, Ian said: “I said exactly that when she missed it. It really does sum up our season. However, we need to make our own luck and today’s performance has given everyone a lift as we look to pick up as many points as possible in our last four games.
“To be honest I am sick of telling people we lost but played really well but that is genuinely what’s happening. Personally I believe we turned a corner today in terms of passion and commitment as we lacked that last week and our last 25 minutes especially today should give us plenty of confidence for next week.”
Although the Gills went behind to a fantastic strike Ian was still not happy with the way his side defended the move.
He added: “If I am being picky we have given her too much time and space and a player of her quality can punish you. It was a brilliant goal from one of the best players in the division.”
Testament to the Gills has to be the way they carried on attacking even when they went three-nil down and this is something that pleased Ian.
He said: “Each time we conceded we responded magnificently and with a bit more luck and better finishing we would have got something out of the game.
“We certainly deserved the goal and possibly more on the day. It wasn’t to be though and I have got to give Portsmouth a lot of credit, they are a good team who know how to win and close out games at this level.
“We will need to start beating teams or it will be too late. Confidence is high despite the result and with a good weeks training we will be ready for Brighton on Sunday.”

from maggy I know just the kind of brgide game you mean. I can remember brgide playing afternoons when someone began a story (family saga kind of)over lunch, and it unfolded like a serial, after lunch, between hands just stop and begin where she left off! And everybody was right on her wavelength keeping up. I believe it is unique to brgide, but then I’ve never played bunco, and mah-jongg is just too noisy with all that wood or ivory rustling around! Where I play here in Florida, at the senior center, we play in the big room of a country club. We’re at one end of it and mah-jongg at the other. Seems to me I never hear a SOUND from that end of the room. We don’t talk TOO much (there are men there too, puts a constraint on things!)but between hands and moving from table to table, most definitely. Not QUITE like an at home ladies brgide lunch.!
