Kay: I will really miss it
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on April 18, 2011
As end of season exits go Les Kay couldn’t have asked for a better way to leave Gillingham Ladies than by winning the double with the Reserves.
After nine years of playing for the Gills Les has finally decided to hang up her boots and stop playing the sport she loves.
In her final interview with the Gills Ladies Official Site, she said: “It’s a great way to finish my career, two very successful seasons, last year doing the double with the firsts and this year the double with the Ressies, is always good to finish on a high and I will go away from this season very sad but very happy too.
“It’s always good to win trophies, but it’s always been good times at Gills, all the years I have been there I have really enjoyed it, the girls have always been quality and I will really miss it, from when I first started at Gills with the old school girls up until now.”
Les’ last game for the Reserves came in the Women’s Plate final against Long Lane on Thursday a game in which she scored.
Talking about the match, she added: “It’s always great to come from behind, it’s even better to do it in a final as that’s just shows how much character the team has, our heads could have easily gone down, but we just picked ourselves and did what we were always going to do and smash them, that team is quality and there was no way we would have lost….although I did say to Kirsty that they would score first!!
“We didn’t expect to concede so early, it was a bit of a shock, but sparked us into life, I think we were all nervous and the goal just helped us to settle and play our game, once we got the ball on the floor and started playing our game we have done all season were always going to win.
“If I had scored the header that would have been amazing, I hardly ever get on the end of the corners, but I managed to but the keeper saved it. I think a pen was the only way I would score, haven’t scored in two seasons so I was very grateful to be allowed to take the pen, and yes it was a great way to bow out.”
For Les to finish her career with the Gills by helping the Reserves to secure a historic double is the ideal way for her to bow out.
She said: “This season has been amazing for all of us, from Aaron and Matt the whole squad has worked their butts off, and we have such a good team spirit that everyone wants the same success and everyone works so hard for each other, and that just shows with winning the league the way we did and also smashing the final! The girls are legends and I will miss them big time!
“It’s always good to win trophies, but it’s always been good times at Gills, all the years I have been there I have really enjoyed it, the girls have always been quality and I will really miss it, from when I first started at Gills with the old school girls up until now!!
“There are quite a few highlights, probably my second season I think I scored about 15 goals…since then I haven’t scored hardly any, erm playing at Layer Road after the Colchester Men’s Team that was pretty good, going all the way to Torbay to play in a cow field!! Obviously winning trophies is always a highlight and winning this season the way we did is amazing, it’s such a massive credit to the girls and Aaron and Matt and how hard everyone has worked they are legends and I bloody love em.
“Obviously I will come and support the girls now and again on a Sunday, make sure they are kicking the arses of Chelsea and Arsenal which I know they will but I won’t be going into coaching or anything.”
